Lingua Ignotae (Unknown Language in Latin) was a script developed by the 12th century abbess of Rupertsberg, Hildegard von Bingen. It is believed she may have used this alphabet for mystical uses. 19th century theorists postulated that she was attempting to create a universal language (an concept most famously expressed in the creation of Esperanto). The Lingua Ignotae is thought to be one of the first attempts at constructed language.
